What's Happening?
The Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation (LADF), in partnership with the County of Los Angeles Department of Parks and Recreation (LA County Parks), is set to break ground on Dodgers Dreamfields 69 and 70 at Charles S. Farnsworth Park in Altadena on Thursday,
November 5, 2026. This $1.4 million investment aims to fully restore two baseball/softball fields, expanding opportunities for recreation, learning, and community connection in Altadena, which is still recovering from the Eaton Fire in January 2025. The fire severely impacted the nearly 15-acre park, damaging its historic William D. Davies Building, other facilities, and critical infrastructure. The groundbreaking ceremony will include a shovel dedication and remarks from LADF CEO Nichol McKenzie-Whiteman, Los Angeles County Fifth District Supervisor Kathryn Barger, LA County Parks Director Norma Garcia-Gonzalez, Dodgers pitcher Blake Snell, and Dodgers broadcaster Jose Mota. These Dreamfields will support baseball and softball programs for youth ages 5–12 and provide open recreational access for youth and teens up to 18.
Why It's Important?
This initiative is crucial for the Altadena community, providing vital recreational infrastructure and a sense of normalcy following the devastating Eaton Fire. The restoration of Charles S. Farnsworth Park, a historic landmark, signifies a significant step in the community's recovery and rebuilding efforts. Beyond providing spaces for sports, the Dreamfields aim to foster community connection and offer educational opportunities through a permanent, self-guided STEM Trail that incorporates LADF’s Science of Baseball curriculum. This project addresses a critical need for safe and inclusive spaces for youth, promoting physical activity, teamwork, and learning. The investment by LADF and LA County Parks demonstrates a commitment to community development and resilience, particularly in areas affected by natural disasters, and highlights the role of sports organizations in broader social welfare.
What's Next?
The groundbreaking ceremony on November 5, 2026, will mark the official start of construction for Dodgers Dreamfields 69 and 70. The project will involve significant upgrades, including new irrigation systems, improved playing surfaces, fencing, solar-powered scoreboards, and enhanced batting cages. The development also includes the creation of a STEM Trail, which will integrate educational elements with the park's natural environment. The LADF aims to complete 75 Dodgers Dreamfields by 2028, and this project is a key step towards that goal. The community can anticipate the eventual opening of these fields, which will provide renewed opportunities for youth sports and community gatherings, contributing to the long-term recovery and revitalization of Altadena.
Beyond the Headlines
The Dodgers Dreamfields project exemplifies the growing trend of professional sports organizations engaging in significant community development and philanthropic efforts. By investing in local infrastructure and educational programs, LADF is not only promoting baseball and softball but also addressing broader societal needs such as youth development, disaster recovery, and STEM education. The integration of a STEM Trail into the park's design highlights an innovative approach to combining sports with academic learning, offering a holistic development experience for children. This initiative underscores the potential for sports franchises to act as powerful agents of social change, leveraging their resources and public platform to create lasting positive impacts beyond the realm of athletics.
