Mike Nyeholt, a three-time All-American freestyle swimmer at USC from 1975-77, was paralyzed in a motorcycle accident in 1981. In response, his friends and teammates, led by fellow swimmer Ron Orr, organized a 'Swim For Mike' event, raising $58,000. Nyeholt suggested
using the excess donations to establish USC's Physically Challenged Athletes Scholarship Fund. The following year, the event became an annual tradition, renamed 'Swim With Mike,' with Nyeholt himself participating. Now in its 45th year, the initiative has raised over $32 million, providing more than 320 college scholarships to athletes who have overcome life-altering accidents or illnesses at USC and 162 other universities.
