What's Happening?
Walmart has introduced a new combined membership offering that integrates Walmart+ and Sam's Club Plus for an annual fee of $120. This new offering is nearly $100 less than the cost of subscribing to both memberships separately. Key benefits of this combined membership include
access to Sam's Club, free delivery from both Walmart and Sam's Club, a choice between Peacock or Paramount+ streaming services, and gas savings of 10 cents per gallon at over 17,000 participating stations. Additionally, members will receive 2% Sam's Cash on eligible purchases. John Furner, president and CEO of Walmart Inc., stated that the goal is to provide more value, saving members money and time. Walmart estimates that customers could be paying nearly $400 annually for separate retail, warehouse club, and streaming memberships.
Why It's Important?
This new combined membership by Walmart represents a significant strategic move to enhance customer loyalty and expand its market share in the competitive retail and subscription service landscape. By offering a comprehensive package at a reduced price, Walmart aims to attract new subscribers and retain existing ones who might be considering other platforms. The inclusion of streaming services like Peacock or Paramount+ adds a compelling entertainment component, broadening the appeal beyond traditional retail benefits. This initiative directly challenges competitors by providing a bundled value proposition that addresses multiple consumer needs—shopping convenience, fuel savings, and entertainment—under a single, affordable subscription. It could also drive increased foot traffic and online engagement across both Walmart and Sam's Club platforms, potentially boosting sales and strengthening Walmart's ecosystem against rivals.
What's Next?
Existing Walmart+ annual members can upgrade to the combined membership for an additional $22 per year, while Sam's Club members can upgrade to Sam's Club Plus for $60 more annually to include Walmart+. Sam's Club Plus members can activate Walmart+ at no extra cost. Customers already subscribed to both services simply need to link their accounts. This tiered approach allows for flexible adoption based on current membership status. Furthermore, Walmart and Sam's Club field associates in the United States will receive this new membership as part of their benefits, potentially increasing internal adoption and advocacy. The success of this new offering will likely be measured by its impact on subscriber growth, customer retention rates, and overall sales performance across Walmart's various retail channels.
