A new study conducted by researchers from Edith Cowan University (ECU) has identified sex-specific associations between vegetable consumption and cardiometabolic health in young adults. Analyzing data from 638 participants in Western Australia's Raine
Study, all around 22 years old, the study compared the intake of five vegetable groups with early indicators of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. The findings suggest that for young men, increased consumption of legumes was associated with a 72.2% lower odds of being in a higher-risk cardiometabolic group. For young women, an additional daily serving of cruciferous vegetables was linked to an 84.9% lower odds of being in the higher-risk group. These associations were observed after adjusting for various influencing factors, including income, education, physical activity, and other dietary components. The study also highlighted that a significant proportion (around 19%) of these young adults already exhibited at least two cardiometabolic risk factors.
