What's Happening?
AI Director Ltd, a one-person AI consultancy based in Royal Sutton Coldfield, has successfully matched a top UK university in quality scoring during a live £96,000 public procurement tender. The bid was processed through an automated AI pipeline developed
by the company's founder, Simon Steggles. This system, known as TenderWatch, scans global government procurement portals to identify contract opportunities. In a test of its capabilities, Steggles entered a tender run by a UK financial regulatory body. The AI tools drafted responses using Steggles' company records, addressing most compliance and technical questions autonomously. The AI also translated complex language into plain English to assist Steggles in finalizing answers. The regulator's evaluation resulted in AI Director Ltd scoring 70% overall, with a perfect score on cost, surpassing the university in this aspect.
Why It's Important?
This development highlights the potential of AI in leveling the playing field for small businesses in public procurement processes. By automating complex paperwork and compliance tasks, AI tools can reduce barriers that typically deter smaller firms from competing for public contracts. This could lead to increased participation from small businesses in public tenders, fostering greater competition and innovation. For industries reliant on rapid iteration and consumer interaction, such as retail and banking, the speed and efficiency offered by AI could be particularly advantageous. However, the broader adoption of such technology also raises questions about the security and ethical implications of AI-driven decision-making in public procurement.
What's Next?
Following the successful test, Simon Steggles plans to enhance the AI system by adding more layers of AI models to cross-check and refine responses. The goal is to win tenders outright and secure a place for AI Director Ltd on public sector frameworks. Steggles is also offering to assist other members of the Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce in exploring whether similar AI-driven approaches could help them access public sector contracts. This initiative could potentially lead to a wider adoption of AI tools in the procurement processes of small businesses, further democratizing access to public contracts.
