What's Happening?
According to Circana BookScan, print book sales in the U.S. have decreased by 0.3% compared to 2025. While adult fiction sales have increased by 5.7%, adult nonfiction sales have declined by 5.8%. The self-help genre experienced the most significant drop,
with a 24% decrease, partly attributed to the declining sales of 'The Let Them Theory' by Mel Robbins. The bestselling title of the year so far is 'Theo of Golden' by Allen Levi, which was initially self-published before being picked up by Simon & Schuster.
Why It's Important?
The stagnation in print book sales reflects broader trends in the publishing industry, where digital formats and changing consumer preferences continue to impact traditional book sales. The decline in nonfiction and self-help genres suggests a shift in reader interests, possibly influenced by economic factors or changing societal priorities. The success of 'Theo of Golden' highlights the potential for self-published authors to achieve mainstream success, indicating a shift in how books are discovered and marketed.
