The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has granted unconditional registration to a new product designed to combat citrus greening disease, also known as Huanglongbing (HLB). This novel therapy is based on naturally occurring antimicrobial peptides,
specifically defensins derived from spinach, which can protect citrus trees from the devastating disease. The development is the result of over a decade of research, primarily led by scientists from Texas A&M and the University of Florida. The product, registered by Maryland-based Silvec Biologics Inc., utilizes a non-transmissible strain of the citrus tristeza virus (CTV) to prompt trees to produce the spinach-derived defensin peptide. This method functions as an immunization, where a small piece of plant material from a specially developed source tree is grafted onto an existing citrus tree, introducing a benign CTV that carries the defensin peptide. Once established, the CTV continuously produces the peptide, helping the tree fight the bacteria associated with citrus greening.
