What's Happening?
The LA Kings celebrated Juneteenth by hosting a special educational event as part of their Black, Silver & Bold Camp. The event, led by Blake Bolden, aimed to foster representation and opportunity within the Black community by connecting families and athletes
to the game of hockey. Participants engaged in discussions about the origins and cultural significance of Juneteenth, promoting community, empathy, and inclusion. The event concluded with treats from Sweet Red Peach, a local Black-owned bakery. The Kings emphasized their commitment to making hockey more inclusive and accessible.
Why It's Important?
The LA Kings' celebration of Juneteenth highlights the growing recognition of the holiday's significance in the U.S. sports industry. By focusing on education and community engagement, the Kings are contributing to broader efforts to increase diversity and inclusion in sports. This initiative not only supports the Black community but also sets a precedent for other sports organizations to follow. The Kings' actions may inspire similar programs across the NHL and other leagues, potentially leading to increased participation and representation of minority groups in hockey.
