What's Happening?
Intrepid Travel is significantly expanding its travel portfolio for 2027, introducing more than 80 new trips and adding over 50 new destinations. This expansion focuses on lesser-known regions in North and Central America, alongside new itineraries designed
for families and younger travelers. The new offerings span various categories including Walking & Trekking, Cycling, Wildlife, Explorer, Expedition, Short Breaks, Family, and 18-35s. Notable additions include a 14-day 'Hidden Gems of Thailand' trip, a 12-day 'Turkey Black Sea Adventure,' and a 7-day 'Hiking in Picos de Europa' in Spain. In North and Central America, new destinations feature Costa Rica’s Guanacaste region, Matagalpa in Nicaragua, Canada’s Yukon territory, and several new areas in Mexico. Five of these new trips will incorporate Indigenous-led experiences. The company's largest brand campaign, 'Who You Travel With Changes Everything,' is currently running in the U.S., Canada, the U.K., and Australia, emphasizing local leaders and small-group travel.
Why It's Important?
This expansion by Intrepid Travel reflects a growing demand for authentic, locally connected, and immersive travel experiences among U.S. consumers. The focus on lesser-known regions and Indigenous-led experiences caters to a demographic increasingly seeking unique cultural engagement rather than conventional tourist hubs. The significant increase in U.S. bookings for trips within the U.S., Canada, and Central America, with Canada trips alone up 46 percent year over year, indicates a strong market shift towards regional and experiential travel. This trend is further supported by the Adventure Travel Trade Association’s 2026 report, which identified hiking, trekking, and walking as the most in-demand adventure activities globally. For the U.S. travel industry, this signifies a need for operators to diversify offerings beyond traditional packages, emphasizing sustainability, cultural immersion, and active exploration to meet evolving consumer preferences. Companies that adapt to these demands are likely to gain a competitive edge.
What's Next?
Intrepid Travel's continued expansion into niche and experiential travel segments suggests a future trend where personalized and culturally rich itineraries will become more prevalent. The company will likely monitor the success of these new offerings to further refine its strategy for subsequent years. Other travel companies in the U.S. market may follow suit, developing similar programs that cater to the demand for authentic and off-the-beaten-path adventures. The emphasis on Indigenous-led experiences could also pave the way for more collaborations with local communities, fostering economic benefits and cultural preservation. As the 'Who You Travel With Changes Everything' campaign continues, it aims to solidify Intrepid Travel's brand identity around its unique small-group format and local leadership, potentially influencing how other travel providers market their services. Future developments may include further specialization in areas like women-focused travel, which saw a 32 percent growth in 2025 for Intrepid Travel.
Beyond the Headlines
The shift towards experiential travel, as exemplified by Intrepid Travel's expansion, has deeper implications for global tourism and local economies. By focusing on lesser-known regions and incorporating Indigenous-led experiences, there's a potential for more equitable distribution of tourism revenue, moving beyond established tourist centers. This approach can empower local communities, provide economic opportunities, and promote cultural exchange, fostering a more sustainable and responsible form of tourism. However, it also presents challenges, such as ensuring that increased tourism in previously untouched areas does not lead to over-tourism or cultural commodification. The emphasis on small-group travel and local guides can mitigate some of these risks by promoting respectful engagement and minimizing environmental impact. This trend highlights a growing consumer consciousness that values ethical travel and authentic interactions, pushing the industry towards more meaningful and impactful travel experiences.
