What's Happening?
Pinterest has announced the general availability of its Programmatic Deals program in select global markets, allowing enterprise advertisers to purchase display and video inventory through strategic supply-side platform (SSP) and demand-side platform (DSP)
partners. This expansion integrates Pinterest's ad offerings into existing programmatic planning, buying, and measurement workflows used by advertisers. Magnite serves as Pinterest's primary SSP, connecting its inventory and audience signals to various buying platforms. Additionally, Pinterest collaborates with Google Ad Manager in Latin America and Asia Pacific to further expand programmatic access. On the demand side, advertisers can access Pinterest inventory through leading DSPs such as Amazon Ads DVA+, Google Display & Video 360, and Yahoo DSP. This initiative aims to broaden demand sources and simplify access to Pinterest's ad inventory, complementing its first-party ads business.
Why It's Important?
This expansion is significant for advertisers seeking to reach consumers at a crucial pre-decisional stage. Pinterest's platform is characterized by users actively searching for ideas and planning purchases, with over 80 billion monthly searches, more than half of which are commercial, and 96% of text searches being unbranded. This provides a unique opportunity for brands to influence purchasing decisions before consumers have committed to specific products or brands. By making its inventory programmatically available, Pinterest is enabling advertisers to leverage these intent signals more efficiently within their existing media strategies. This move could lead to more effective ad campaigns, potentially increasing return on investment for businesses and driving greater ad revenue for Pinterest.
What's Next?
The general availability of Programmatic Deals is expected to lead to increased adoption by enterprise advertisers looking to integrate Pinterest into their broader media plans. Pinterest will likely continue to expand its partnerships with SSPs and DSPs to further enhance accessibility and reach. The company will also monitor the performance of these programmatic campaigns, using data and insights to refine its offerings and demonstrate the value proposition to advertisers. Success stories, such as the Moroccanoil campaign that saw 15% incremental reach and 63% more new-to-brand buyers, will be crucial in attracting more brands to utilize Pinterest's programmatic advertising solutions. Further geographical expansion of the program is also a possibility.
Beyond the Headlines
This strategic shift by Pinterest highlights a broader trend in digital advertising towards programmatic buying, emphasizing efficiency and integration across various platforms. By opening its inventory to programmatic channels, Pinterest is not only enhancing its revenue potential but also positioning itself as a more integral part of the omnichannel marketing ecosystem. This move could also influence how other visual discovery platforms approach their advertising strategies, potentially leading to a more interconnected and automated digital ad landscape. The focus on 'pre-decisional intent' underscores the evolving understanding of consumer behavior in the digital age, where influencing early-stage consideration is becoming increasingly valuable for brands.
