The South32 Hermosa mining project in the Patagonia Mountains, approximately 75 miles south of Tucson, Arizona, has received its final federal permit to expand operations onto U.S. Forest Service land. The U.S. Forest Service signed off on the permit,
allowing South32 to construct a power line, an access road, and other support infrastructure across portions of Coronado National Forest adjacent to the mine's existing 750 acres of private land. This project marks the first mining operation to successfully navigate the federal fast-track permitting program known as FAST-41 from start to finish. South32 Hermosa President Pat Risner highlighted this as a significant moment for an industry often challenged by lengthy federal review processes. USDA Deputy Secretary Stephen Vaden emphasized the national security implications, noting that the U.S. has not mined manganese since the 1970s, a critical mineral for steel and electric vehicle batteries.
