What's Happening?
Inizio Evoke, a global health marketing and communications firm under the Inizio network, which is part of the Clayton, Dubilier & Rice holding company, has appointed Christopher Hedquist as its Executive Vice President of U.S. Policy and Public Affairs.
Effective this month, Hedquist will lead the agency's policy and public affairs function, focusing on translating policy and its impact on businesses, stakeholders, and reputation for clients. He will be based in the Boston region but will work remotely and from the agency’s Washington, D.C., office. Hedquist reports to Stephanie DeViteri, Inizio Evoke Comms North America president, and joins the firm’s executive leadership team for North America. His previous role was head of U.S. health policy and public affairs at Edelman, where he spent six years establishing their health public affairs practice. Before Edelman, Hedquist held various roles at Novo Nordisk for over a decade, including global product manager of diabetes device marketing and regional lead for state government affairs.
Why It's Important?
This appointment signifies Inizio Evoke's strategic move to integrate policy and public affairs more deeply into its core communications offerings for U.S. clients, particularly within the healthcare sector. The firm aims to provide a more cohesive and responsive service by combining government affairs with marketing and communications, an area Hedquist noted was often siloed in his previous experiences. This integration is crucial in the current healthcare environment, where policy changes can significantly impact businesses and their stakeholders. By enhancing its policy expertise, Inizio Evoke seeks to better anticipate market shifts and communicate effectively on behalf of its clients, offering a more comprehensive approach to navigating complex regulatory and public perception landscapes. This move could set a new standard for health marketing and communications agencies, emphasizing the critical link between policy and public relations.
What's Next?
Hedquist and DeViteri plan to identify and integrate employees with policy and public affairs experience across the organization to mirror clients' internal structures related to health policy. This initiative aims to bring a more unified and proactive approach to policy communications for Inizio Evoke's U.S. clients. The firm's goal is to react faster to market developments and anticipate future trends, ensuring clients are well-prepared for policy changes. This strategic integration could lead to more robust and effective communication strategies for healthcare companies, potentially influencing public discourse and policy outcomes in the U.S. healthcare landscape. The success of this integrated approach could also serve as a model for other agencies in the health communications sector.
Beyond the Headlines
The appointment of Christopher Hedquist reflects a broader trend in the communications industry where specialized expertise in policy and public affairs is becoming increasingly vital, especially in highly regulated sectors like healthcare. The move to integrate these functions more closely with marketing and communications highlights a recognition that effective communication in today's environment requires a deep understanding of the legislative and regulatory landscape. This shift suggests a move away from siloed departmental operations towards a more holistic approach, where policy considerations are embedded from the outset of any communications strategy. This could lead to more ethically sound and strategically aligned campaigns, as companies become more adept at navigating the complex interplay between public perception, regulatory compliance, and business objectives. The emphasis on anticipating market changes also points to a proactive rather than reactive stance in corporate communications.
