What's Happening?
IHG Hotels & Resorts, in collaboration with Talker Research, conducted a survey of 1,000 Americans, revealing a growing interest in 'skillcations'—travel experiences that combine learning new skills with leisure. Nearly half of the respondents expressed
interest in such vacations, with 68% believing they could be life-changing. The trend is particularly popular among younger travelers, with 41% of Gen Z and Millennials having already taken a skillcation, compared to 16% of Baby Boomers. The survey also highlighted a strong inclination towards digital detox, with 68% of participants open to disconnecting from technology during their trips, especially among Gen Z at 83%. IHG is capitalizing on this trend by offering bundled packages that simplify logistics and cater to various budgets, making skillcations more accessible.
Why It's Important?
The rise of skillcations reflects a shift in travel preferences, emphasizing personal growth and meaningful experiences over traditional sightseeing. This trend could significantly impact the travel industry by encouraging hotels and resorts to offer more educational and immersive experiences. It also highlights a societal move towards digital detox, as people seek to reduce screen time and reconnect with the physical world. This could influence how travel companies design their offerings, potentially leading to a broader range of educational and wellness-focused travel packages. The trend also suggests a growing market for travel experiences that cater to personal development and mental well-being.
What's Next?
As the skillcation trend gains momentum, travel companies may expand their offerings to include a wider variety of skills and experiences, from culinary arts to outdoor adventures. This could lead to partnerships with local experts and businesses to provide authentic learning experiences. Additionally, the emphasis on digital detox may encourage the development of technology-free zones or activities within resorts. The travel industry might also see an increase in demand for customizable travel packages that allow individuals to tailor their experiences to their personal interests and goals.
