India is actively pursuing the 'India Semiconductor Mission' to transform its role in the global semiconductor industry from a major market to a leading global powerhouse. This initiative aims to establish a comprehensive ecosystem covering design, manufacturing,
packaging, materials, equipment, skills, and system assembly. The country has historically relied heavily on chip imports despite being one of the world's largest electronics markets. The 'Semicon India 2026' event, scheduled for September 17-19, 2026, in New Delhi, will showcase these ambitions. Under 'Semicon 1.0,' 12 semiconductor projects have been approved, with three already in commercial production. The Union Cabinet approved 'Semicon 2.0' with an outlay of ₹1,27,500 crore, focusing on elevating the semiconductor design and manufacturing ecosystem, including Indian-designed chips, fab expansion, advanced packaging, and supply chain strengthening.
