What's Happening?
A coalition of major companies, including Google, Salesforce, H&M, and Anthropic, has committed $1.8 billion to carbon removal initiatives through the Frontier advance market commitment (AMC). Launched in 2022, Frontier initially aimed to mobilize $1 billion for carbon removal technologies.
The commitment has now grown, with additional funds earmarked to support technologies with gigaton-scale potential. In 2025, participating companies delivered 23,000 tons of carbon removal capacity, nearly doubling the previous year's output. The initiative plans to expand removal capacity further, with a focus on technologies like biomass carbon removal, ocean alkalinity enhancement, and direct air capture. The goal is to achieve gigaton-scale removals, requiring collaboration between companies and governments.
