What's Happening?
An in-person and online somatic meditation session titled 'Making Space for Discomfort' will be led by Kathy Cherry on Thursday, November 12th, 2026, from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM ET. The session aims to help participants explore their relationship with discomfort,
moving beyond typical reactions of trying to calm, fix, or intellectualize it. It will delve into the five hindrances—desire, aversion, dullness, restlessness, and doubt—as avenues for investigation rather than obstacles. The program emphasizes using presence and curiosity as the core practice, allowing the body to naturally find ease. No prior experience in somatic work or meditation is required, making it accessible to a broad audience. The in-person location is New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street, 12th Floor, with an online option available via Zoom.
Why It's Important?
This somatic meditation session addresses a fundamental human challenge: how to effectively deal with discomfort. In a society that often encourages avoidance or quick fixes for unpleasant feelings, this approach offers a valuable alternative by promoting mindful engagement with discomfort. By exploring the five hindrances, participants can gain deeper insights into their emotional and physical responses, fostering a greater capacity for resilience and self-regulation. The ability to 'stay in relationship with not-knowing' and meet uncertainty directly is a crucial life skill, particularly in an unpredictable world. This session provides practical tools for cultivating emotional intelligence and developing a more compassionate relationship with oneself, which can lead to improved mental well-being and reduced stress.
What's Next?
Individuals interested in attending the 'Making Space for Discomfort' session can register for either the in-person or online option. The program will be recorded, and the recording will be sent to all registrants, allowing those unable to attend live to still benefit from the content. This flexibility ensures wider accessibility and impact. The session is designed to provide participants with transferable skills for navigating discomfort, which can be applied in various aspects of their lives. The New York Insight Meditation Center encourages participants to register at a 'Supporter' level if possible, to enable others to attend at a 'Subsidized' level, promoting inclusivity and community support for mindfulness practices. This model helps ensure that valuable wellness resources are available to a diverse group of individuals.
Beyond the Headlines
The focus on somatic meditation and 'making space for discomfort' reflects a growing understanding of the mind-body connection in mental health. Traditional approaches often separate mental and physical well-being, but somatic practices emphasize their integration. This shift acknowledges that emotional experiences are not just cognitive but are deeply felt and stored in the body. By learning to observe and be present with bodily sensations of discomfort, individuals can release tension and foster a more integrated sense of self. This approach challenges the cultural tendency to intellectualize or suppress emotions, advocating instead for a more embodied and compassionate way of being. It suggests a move towards more holistic and experiential methods in personal development and therapeutic practices.
