U.S. card issuers are increasingly focusing on real-time anti-fraud capabilities and scam detection, with 41% of high Customer Lifetime Value (CLTV) issuers and 45% of overall issuers planning investments in these areas over the next 12 months. This shift
is driven by the growing sophistication of fraud, which is no longer just a cost center but a strategic tool for building cardholder trust and increasing revenue. The PYMNTS Intelligence report, 'Building Trust, Fueling Growth,' produced in collaboration with Visa Digital Processing Solutions, highlights that 51% of issuers use fraud prevention and security enhancements to build trust and increase CLTV. Despite increased technology spending, the share of issuers generating high CLTV has fallen from 21% to 17% in one year. Fraud and disputes are ranked as the first or second-highest platform operating cost by more than four in ten issuers. Cybersecurity concerns have also nearly doubled among medium-CLTV issuers, from 26% to 44%. The report suggests these increases reflect issuers pushing existing technology harder as digital operations and fraud decisioning become more complex. Card fraud detection and prevention is already the most widely adopted AI risk capability, with roughly six in ten issuers deploying or actively enhancing real-time fraud detection.
