ZF Lifetec has introduced a four-airbag concept designed to improve safety for occupants in comfort seating positions, which are common in vehicles with automated driving features. These positions can alter crash dynamics and increase the risk of submarining,
where the pelvis slides beneath the lap belt during a collision. The system includes four coordinated modules: the Seat Ramp Airbag, Dual Contour Knee Airbag, Active Heel Airbag, and Dual Contour Airbag. Each module is strategically placed to stabilize occupant motion and reduce injury risks. The airbags work in conjunction with adaptive seatbelt systems, managed by a smart algorithm that uses camera-based occupant sensing and seat angle data. The concept is set for series production in 2028 and will be showcased at the AIRBAG 2026 conference in Mannheim, Germany.
