What's Happening?
Alaska Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, and Horizon Air are jointly offering an internship program for the summer of 2027. This program is designed for students pursuing a Bachelor's degree with a focus on aviation management, business analytics, statistics,
or atmospheric and climate science. Interns will be based in SeaTac, WA, and will engage in full-time, 12-week projects impacting the airlines' operations and business. Key duties include implementing cross-divisional improvement processes for the airline Network Operations Center (NOC), analyzing operational performance data, conducting root cause analysis for operational trends, and assisting with the execution of operational plans. The program emphasizes skill development and valuable work experience, offering interns opportunities to network with employees and company leaders. Interns will also receive unlimited standby travel benefits across the airlines' networks during their internship.
Why It's Important?
This joint internship program signifies a strategic investment in future talent within the U.S. aviation industry, particularly in critical areas like network operations and data analytics. By fostering a pipeline of skilled professionals, Alaska Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, and Horizon Air are addressing the ongoing demand for specialized expertise in a rapidly evolving sector. The program's focus on operational efficiency and data-driven decision-making reflects the industry's increasing reliance on advanced analytics to enhance safety, optimize flight planning, and improve overall network performance. For students, it offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience with major U.S. carriers, potentially leading to future employment and contributing to the long-term stability and innovation of the American airline industry. The provision of travel benefits also highlights a perk designed to attract top talent in a competitive market.
What's Next?
The application deadline for the Summer 2027 internship program is November 8, 2026, at 7:00 PM Pacific Time. Prospective interns will need to meet specific criteria, including having at least one semester or quarter of school remaining after the internship and achieving a junior or higher academic standing. Successful applicants will relocate to SeaTac, WA, for the duration of the program. While the internship provides valuable experience, it does not guarantee future employment with the airlines. The program's success will likely be measured by the quality of projects completed by interns and their subsequent contributions to the aviation sector, potentially influencing future recruitment strategies and the development of similar industry-wide initiatives.
Beyond the Headlines
The collaborative nature of this internship program between Alaska Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, and Horizon Air suggests a broader trend of resource sharing and talent development within the U.S. airline industry.
