What's Happening?
Aldi, a discount supermarket chain, has provided advice on how to keep bananas fresh for longer periods. The supermarket collaborated with food storage expert Kate Hall to offer tips on preserving various foods, including bananas, milk, and potatoes.
According to Aldi, the average Briton discards £387 worth of food annually, with many purchasing items they expect to waste. To combat this, Hall suggests slicing and freezing bananas to prevent them from becoming brown or mushy. This method involves spreading banana slices on a lined tray before freezing and then storing them in a resealable freezer bag. This approach not only extends the fruit's shelf life but also provides a convenient ingredient for making banana ice cream or chocolate peanut butter bites.
Why It's Important?
The advice from Aldi is significant as it addresses the issue of food waste, which has both economic and environmental implications. By reducing food waste, consumers can save money and contribute to environmental sustainability. The freezing technique for bananas is a practical solution that can be applied to other fruits and vegetables, helping to extend their usability and reduce the frequency of grocery shopping. This initiative aligns with broader efforts to promote sustainable living and responsible consumption, which are increasingly important in the context of global food security and environmental conservation.
