TIDAL, a music streaming platform, has announced a significant change to its direct-to-fan model by eliminating its platform fee on music and merchandise sales for eligible U.S.-based artists. As of August 31, TIDAL has reduced its previous 10% cut to 0%,
meaning the platform will no longer take a percentage from direct sales. Standard payment-processing fees through Square will still apply. This initiative allows independent artists to upload albums, set their own selling prices, and offer direct purchase options to fans. Music can be sold without requiring either the artist or the buyer to maintain a paid TIDAL subscription. Additionally, eligible artists can connect their Square store inventory to their TIDAL profile, enabling fans to discover and purchase physical merchandise while listening to their music. Artists are responsible for fulfillment, shipping, returns, and customer service. While selling is currently restricted to U.S.-based artists, fans in the U.S., Canada, U.K., Switzerland, and the European Economic Area can purchase eligible music. TIDAL plans to expand its music and merchandise sales integration internationally.
