What's Happening?
Will Rockett, formerly an Executive Director at Morgan Stanley Asset Management, has joined Mercer Advisors as the Senior Director of Investment Strategy. In his new role, Rockett will lead the Investment Strategist team, providing thought leadership,
portfolio construction, and analytical support to Mercer Advisors' clients. His responsibilities will include delivering institutional-grade portfolios. Prior to his tenure at Morgan Stanley, Rockett held a leadership position at Charles Schwab, where he served as Managing Director of the Fixed Income organization. He also worked as a high-yield credit and distressed securities analyst for both Nuveen and U.S. Trust Company. Rockett holds a B.A. in mathematics from Rollins College and an MBA from New York University’s Stern School of Business, with a concentration in finance. He is also a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) charterholder and an Adjunct Professor of finance and business ethics at Fordham University.
Why It's Important?
This move is significant for Mercer Advisors as it brings in a seasoned professional with over two decades of experience in finance and investment strategy. Rockett's expertise, particularly in credit, equity, and alternative strategies, is expected to enhance Mercer Advisors' capabilities in delivering sophisticated investment solutions to its clients. His background in leading relationship management for large RIA clients at Morgan Stanley suggests a strong focus on client-centric strategies, which could improve client satisfaction and retention for Mercer Advisors. The addition of a CFA charterholder and an academic with an MBA from a prestigious institution like NYU Stern also bolsters the intellectual capital and credibility of Mercer Advisors' investment team, potentially attracting more high-net-worth clients and institutional investors seeking advanced portfolio management and strategic insights.
What's Next?
Will Rockett will immediately assume his role as Senior Director of Investment Strategy at Mercer Advisors, leading the Investment Strategist team. His initial focus will likely involve integrating his expertise into Mercer Advisors' existing frameworks and developing new strategies to support the firm's clients. This could include refining portfolio construction methodologies, enhancing analytical tools, and providing thought leadership on market trends and investment opportunities. His academic role at Fordham University may also allow for a synergistic exchange of ideas between academia and practical investment management, potentially influencing Mercer Advisors' long-term strategic outlook. The firm may leverage his extensive experience to expand its offerings in alternative strategies and complex credit markets, catering to a broader range of client needs.
Beyond the Headlines
Rockett's transition highlights a broader trend in the financial advisory sector where firms are increasingly seeking top-tier talent from major investment banks to enhance their strategic capabilities and differentiate their services. This move could signal Mercer Advisors' ambition to compete more directly with larger financial institutions by offering a more sophisticated and institutional-grade investment experience. The emphasis on 'thought leadership' and 'analytical support' suggests a focus beyond mere asset allocation, moving towards a more holistic and intellectually driven approach to wealth management. This could set a new standard for client expectations within the independent advisory space, pushing other firms to invest more heavily in their research and strategy teams to remain competitive.
