What's Happening?
The musical duo Big Benny Bailey, composed of Shamir Bailey and Ben Pierce, has announced their debut album titled 'Business Spice,' set to be released on September 18 via Thirty Tigers. Alongside this
announcement, the duo has released a new single, 'Bottom of a Grave,' providing a preview of the album's sound. The record is described as a blend of bluegrass and Americana with elements of indie songwriting, grunge influences, and contemporary humor. The album's lyrical themes explore anxiety, depression, romantic disappointment, and resilience, utilizing mandolin, fiddle, and close vocal harmonies. The project originated from an unexpected collaboration between Bailey and Pierce, who met through a Philadelphia diner where Pierce worked. Bailey had unreleased folk songs from 2021, and Pierce, a punk-turned-Americana musician, offered to play guitar, leading to the formation of the duo in February 2022. The album was produced by Patrick M’Gonigle and features contributions from Reed Stutz, Sami Braman, and Morgan Blaney.

This fusion can be seen as a response to a more eclectic and digitally-native audience that is less bound by traditional genre classifications. The duo's use of lyrical themes such as anxiety and depression, alongside references to internet culture and everyday modern experiences like Uber rides, speaks to the current zeitgeist and the mental health conversations prevalent in society. Their ability to translate these contemporary anxieties into a roots-music framework highlights the enduring versatility of traditional forms to address modern concerns.
