What's Happening?
The U.S. Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) is providing funding for a feasibility study for a new submarine cable system designed to connect Thailand directly with the U.S. The proposed Thailand-U.S. Submarine Cable System (THUS) could span up to 11,500
miles and would also link Thailand with up to five other Southeast Asian countries, including Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Vietnam. Thailand's state-owned National Telecom Public Company Limited (NT) has selected Florida-based APTelecom to conduct this study. The project aims to replace Thailand's aging subsea connectivity to the U.S. with a new open-access system built to U.S. engineering and security standards. A key aspect of the proposed route is its design to avoid the South China Sea and other areas identified as carrying security risks.

This initiative is significant for U.S. strategic interests in Southeast Asia, promoting the use of trusted technology standards and creating opportunities for U.S. companies to supply hardware, software, and installation services.
