What's Happening?
Global law firm DLA Piper has announced the hiring of three senior lawyers from Latham & Watkins to bolster its private credit and capital solutions practice. Jesse Sheff, who was a partner at Latham & Watkins for 16 years and advised major asset managers
like BlackRock Inc. and Apollo Global Management, will now lead the group at DLA Piper. He is joined by Seung-Ju Paik and Preeta Paragash, both of whom previously served as counsel at Latham & Watkins and will now join DLA Piper as partners. This move is part of DLA Piper's broader strategy to expand its presence in private credit, leveraged finance, and strategic capital initiatives. The firm initiated its capital solutions business in March, led by Ranesh Ramanathan, formerly of Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld, and also brought in Alex Cushman and Daniel Wayte. DLA Piper plans to add several more teams throughout the year as it continues its aggressive expansion in these areas.
Why It's Important?
This strategic recruitment by DLA Piper signals a significant shift in the competitive landscape of legal services for the private credit market. By attracting seasoned professionals from a top-tier firm like Latham & Watkins, which ranked first in 2025 for advising lenders on U.S. leveraged loans, DLA Piper aims to capture a larger share of this lucrative market. The private credit sector has seen substantial growth, offering alternative financing solutions outside traditional banking. Law firms with robust private credit capabilities are well-positioned to advise on complex transactions, including unitranche financings, direct lending, and distressed debt. This expansion by DLA Piper reflects the increasing demand for specialized legal expertise in this evolving financial segment, potentially intensifying competition among law firms for high-value private credit mandates and talent.
What's Next?
DLA Piper's continued expansion in private credit is expected to involve further team additions throughout the year, as indicated by the firm's plans. This aggressive growth strategy suggests that DLA Piper will likely pursue more significant mandates in the private credit and leveraged finance sectors, directly competing with established players. The firm's enhanced capabilities could lead to increased market share and influence in advising both lenders and borrowers in complex private financing deals. Other law firms may respond by strengthening their own private credit practices through similar lateral hires or internal development to maintain competitiveness. The movement of high-profile legal talent also highlights the growing importance and profitability of the private credit market within the broader financial industry.
Beyond the Headlines
The movement of senior legal talent between major law firms like Latham & Watkins and DLA Piper underscores a broader trend in the legal industry: the increasing specialization and demand for expertise in niche, high-growth financial sectors. Private credit, once a smaller segment, has matured into a significant component of global finance, driven by regulatory changes impacting traditional banks and the need for flexible capital solutions. This shift has created a premium for lawyers with deep experience in structuring and negotiating private debt transactions. The competitive hiring of such talent reflects not only the financial opportunities but also the strategic imperative for law firms to adapt to evolving market demands, ensuring they can provide comprehensive services in complex and rapidly changing financial landscapes. This trend also points to the growing influence of alternative financing on the U.S. economy.
