What's Happening?
Robert Townsend, a pioneering Black filmmaker, is set to inaugurate a new artist-in-residence series at the Balboa and 4-Star Theaters in San Francisco. The series, running from August 5 to 9, will feature nine films, including four directed by Townsend himself.
The screenings will include introductions and post-screening Q&As with notable actors and directors such as Boots Riley and Carl Franklin. The series aims to provide a platform for Black film history and critique Hollywood's portrayal of Black stories, as exemplified by Townsend's 1987 film 'Hollywood Shuffle'. The program is expected to be well-attended, following the success of a recent screening with director Carl Franklin.
