What's Happening?
Cicadas, known for their loud and distinctive songs, fall silent when temperatures drop due to a physiological constraint. These insects rely on a process called cymbalization, where males produce sound to attract females. However, as ectotherms, cicadas
require a specific temperature range to activate the muscles needed for sound production. When temperatures fall below this threshold, their metabolism slows, and the muscles become too stiff to function, causing the chorus to abruptly stop.
