Facebook has launched Astryx, an open-source design system designed to be fully customizable and 'agent-ready,' meaning it's built for both human developers and AI assistants. Astryx, which has been developed
and used internally at Meta for the past eight years, is now available in Beta. It powers over 13,000 applications within Meta and offers more than 150 accessible components, brand-level theming, dark mode capabilities, ready-to-ship templates, and a Command Line Interface (CLI). The system is built on React 19+ and StyleX, allowing developers to import pre-built CSS and utilize typed React components without needing additional build plugins or styling libraries. A key feature is its 'open internals,' which allows components to be composed at various levels, providing flexibility for developers. Additionally, it offers 'no styling lock-in,' enabling compatibility with various styling methods like Tailwind, CSS modules, or plain CSS.
