A study by Flinders University, published in the journal Nutrients, indicates that high coffee consumption may be associated with lower bone mineral density (BMD) in older, postmenopausal women. Researchers analyzed the coffee and tea consumption of 9,704
women aged 65 and older over a decade, measuring BMD at the femoral neck and hip. The findings revealed that drinking more than five cups of coffee daily was linked to lower BMD, while moderate consumption (two to three cups) showed no negative effects. Conversely, tea consumption was associated with higher total hip BMD. The study also noted that coffee's negative impact on BMD was more pronounced in women with higher alcohol intake.
