What's Happening?
RSM, a top 10 accounting firm, has introduced 'RSM Beacon,' an AI-driven control testing platform for internal audit functions. Developed in cooperation with AI-powered audit and compliance technology firm Andera, Beacon integrates Andera's AI technology with RSM's
proprietary testing methodology. The platform automates the preparation of control test work papers by processing control descriptions, testing attributes, and supporting evidence. It reads evidence, tests each attribute, and generates fully annotated, review-ready work papers that mimic manual preparation. RSM Beacon is designed to handle various evidence types, including complex Excel workbooks with embedded files, screenshots, and annotations, and can manage high-volume, multi-sample controls. The platform is currently live and being utilized by RSM professionals. RSM is also exploring its application beyond SOX, to control frameworks such as SOC, NIST, PCI, and operational audits.
Why It's Important?
The launch of RSM Beacon signifies a significant advancement in the internal audit landscape, particularly for middle-market companies that RSM primarily serves. By automating the labor-intensive process of preparing control test work papers, the platform can substantially increase efficiency and accuracy in audits. This innovation addresses the growing demand for more streamlined and robust compliance processes in an increasingly complex regulatory environment. For businesses, this could translate into reduced audit costs, faster audit cycles, and improved risk management. The integration of AI also highlights a broader trend of technology adoption in professional services, pushing firms to enhance their capabilities and offer more sophisticated solutions to clients. The ability to apply this technology to various control frameworks like SOC, NIST, and PCI further broadens its impact, making it a versatile tool for comprehensive compliance and operational audits.
What's Next?
RSM plans to continue evaluating and expanding the application of RSM Beacon to various control frameworks beyond SOX, including SOC, NIST, PCI, and operational audits. This expansion could lead to a more comprehensive and integrated approach to internal audit across different compliance standards. The firm will likely focus on refining the platform's capabilities and integrating it further into its service offerings. As the platform is already live and in use by RSM professionals, the next steps will involve gathering user feedback, identifying areas for enhancement, and potentially developing new features. The success of RSM Beacon could also influence other accounting and consulting firms to accelerate their adoption of AI in audit processes, fostering a more competitive and technologically advanced professional services industry.
Beyond the Headlines
The introduction of RSM Beacon underscores the transformative potential of artificial intelligence in professional services, particularly in fields traditionally reliant on manual, labor-intensive processes. This development raises important questions about the evolving role of human auditors, who will increasingly shift from repetitive data processing to higher-value tasks such as judgment, analysis, and strategic oversight. While the platform automates documentation, it critically flags ambiguous items for human review, emphasizing that AI is a tool to augment, not entirely replace, human expertise. This hybrid approach highlights the ethical considerations in AI deployment, ensuring that critical judgment calls remain with human professionals. Furthermore, the move towards AI-guided audits could set new industry standards for efficiency, accuracy, and compliance, potentially influencing regulatory expectations and client demands for audit services in the long term.
