What's Happening?
Damen Shipyards Group has entered into a contract with Seaspan ULC for the delivery of two ASD Tugs 2813. The agreement was finalized on May 19 during the International Tug and Salvage Convention in Gothenburg, Sweden. These tugs will be the first of their
kind to join the Seaspan fleet and will be operated under the HaiSea Marine partnership, a joint venture between Seaspan and the Haisla Nation. The ASD Tug 2813 is designed for safety and efficiency, featuring a 27.59-meter length and a 12.93-meter beam for stability, with a bollard pull of up to 70 tons. The vessels will include a winterization package and FiFi 1 firefighting capabilities, and are set to be constructed at Damen Song Cam Shipyard in Vietnam, with delivery expected in the fourth quarter of next year.
Why It's Important?
The addition of these tugs to the Seaspan fleet represents a significant enhancement in operational capabilities, particularly in terms of safety and efficiency. The partnership with the Haisla Nation underscores a commitment to indigenous collaboration and economic development in the Kitimat region of British Columbia. The advanced features of the ASD Tug 2813, such as the winterization package and firefighting capabilities, are crucial for operations in challenging environments, potentially reducing operational risks and improving response times in emergencies. This development also highlights the ongoing global demand for advanced maritime vessels, which supports the shipbuilding industry and related sectors.
What's Next?
The construction of the tugs at Damen Song Cam Shipyard in Vietnam will proceed, with delivery scheduled for the fourth quarter of next year. Seaspan and the Haisla Nation will likely focus on integrating these vessels into their operations, potentially leading to increased efficiency and safety in their maritime activities. The successful deployment of these tugs could set a precedent for future collaborations between maritime companies and indigenous groups, promoting further economic and operational partnerships.
