NVIDIA, currently the world's most valuable company by market capitalization, is facing accusations of greenwashing, according to a new analysis. The report, authored by analyst Ketan Joshi and a consortium of civil society groups including Greenpeace
International and Friends of the Earth, alleges that NVIDIA has been misleadingly masking its significant emissions impacts. The analysis indicates that NVIDIA's indirect emissions have surged by 725% since 2020. Furthermore, it is estimated that undisclosed emissions from the use of sold chips could be nearly double the reported figures. Avex Li, Project Lead for Greenpeace East Asia's AI Supply Chain Campaign, stated that NVIDIA promotes AI as a solution to the climate crisis while overlooking the rapidly increasing emissions associated with its own products and supply chain. The briefing is the first to specifically analyze NVIDIA's greenwashing-style statements. The company's business model, heavily reliant on chips manufactured in East Asia and used in energy-intensive data centers for generative AI, is cited as a major contributor to the climate crisis and adverse effects on local communities.
