What's Happening?
United Airlines has revamped its MileagePlus program to encourage members to hold a co-branded United credit card. As of April 2026, the program's new structure allows cardholders to earn more miles on flights compared to non-cardholders. Previously,
the number of miles earned was based solely on a member's elite status, but now, holding a co-branded card significantly boosts earning rates. For example, cardholders earn additional miles per dollar spent on both standard and Basic Economy fares. Furthermore, co-branded cardholders receive discounts on award flights, with savings of at least 10% for non-elite members and 15% for those with Premier elite status. The changes also include expanded availability of Polaris Business Class saver-level award seats for cardholders.
Why It's Important?
The changes to the MileagePlus program underscore the growing importance of co-branded credit cards in the airline industry. By incentivizing card ownership, United Airlines aims to increase customer loyalty and engagement with its MileagePlus program. This strategy could lead to higher revenue from card partnerships and increased flight bookings as cardholders seek to maximize their benefits. The move aligns with broader industry trends where airlines leverage credit card partnerships to enhance customer retention and generate additional revenue streams. For consumers, the changes mean that holding a co-branded card is now more beneficial, potentially influencing their choice of airline and travel habits.
What's Next?
As the new MileagePlus structure takes effect, United Airlines may see an increase in applications for its co-branded credit cards. The airline could also face competitive pressure from other carriers to enhance their loyalty programs and card offerings. Additionally, consumer advocacy groups might scrutinize the changes to ensure transparency and fairness in how miles and benefits are awarded. United Airlines will likely monitor the program's impact on customer satisfaction and loyalty, adjusting its strategy as needed to maintain a competitive edge in the airline industry.
