South Africa is preparing to launch its inaugural sovereign green bond, aiming to secure up to US$8 billion annually by 2030 to finance its energy transition and broader climate and development objectives. The National Treasury is working towards an issuance
by March 2027, though it could shift to the 2027–2028 fiscal year depending on market conditions and budget processes. This green bond initiative is part of a larger strategy to attract environmental, social, and governance (ESG) capital. Unlike traditional green bonds that primarily focus on renewable energy, South Africa's framework allows for a wider range of eligible uses.
