What's Happening?
India's market regulator, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), plans to relax disclosure requirements for offshore funds deemed high risk. The move comes in response to complaints and legal challenges following rules introduced during scrutiny
of the Adani Group. The proposed changes aim to address unintended consequences of the 2023 rules, which were designed to prevent concentrated investments in Indian companies. The adjustments are expected to make it easier for thematic funds to invest in India, as foreign portfolio investors have sold a record $26.88 billion in 2026.
Why It's Important?
The relaxation of disclosure rules for offshore funds is significant for India's financial markets, as it could attract more foreign investment. The changes are intended to alleviate concerns among investors and encourage long-term capital inflows, which are crucial for economic growth. The move also reflects the challenges regulators face in balancing transparency with market competitiveness. By addressing investor concerns, India aims to enhance its appeal as an investment destination, potentially boosting economic activity and supporting the government's broader economic objectives.
