What's Happening?
The Onassis Foundation is set to launch 'Six Rings,' a new fashion and culture destination located at 99 Patission Boulevard in Athens, Greece, in December 2026. This initiative, developed under the artistic direction of Afroditi Panagiotakou and Stavros
Karelis, will transform the historic Matala Arcade into a two-story hub. 'Six Rings' aims to integrate international fashion brands, emerging Greek designers, contemporary art, and independent local businesses. The visual identity, including a neon facade and logo, is designed by British artist Tim Etchells, inspired by Aristotle Onassis's concept of adding a sixth ring to the Olympic symbol for Olympic Airways. The interior architecture, conceived by Greek architect Loukas Bakas, is designed as a contemporary home that explores the relationship between construction and deconstruction.
Why It's Important?
The establishment of 'Six Rings' by the Onassis Foundation signifies a significant investment in cultural and economic revitalization within Athens. By creating a space that merges fashion, art, and local businesses, the project aims to foster a dynamic cultural ecosystem. This initiative can attract international attention to Athens as a creative hub, potentially boosting tourism and local commerce. For the fashion industry, it provides a new platform for both established international brands, such as Yohji Yamamoto and collaborations with designers like Grace Wales Bonner, and emerging Greek talent, offering them greater exposure and market access. The integration of art and independent businesses also promotes a holistic cultural experience, enriching the urban landscape and providing new opportunities for artists and entrepreneurs.
What's Next?
Following its December 2026 opening, 'Six Rings' will host a variety of programs, including artworks from the Onassis Collection, artist commissions, workshops, and mentoring initiatives. A program titled 'DIALOGUES,' curated by Yiorgos Eleftheriades, will specifically showcase emerging Greek designers. Additionally, a collaboration with Central Saint Martins will introduce a fashion residency in Athens through the Onassis AiR program starting in 2027. The broader Matala Arcade development will also feature an all-day food and drink concept and soundscapes by STEGI.RADIO. In late 2027, the floor above 'Six Rings' will open as the Petridis Collection, housing a vast record collection and hosting music-focused events, further expanding the cultural offerings of the complex.
Beyond the Headlines
The 'Six Rings' project represents more than just a retail and cultural space; it embodies a vision for urban regeneration and cultural innovation. By transforming a historic arcade, the Onassis Foundation is breathing new life into an existing structure, preserving architectural heritage while adapting it for contemporary use. The emphasis on connecting international and local talents, alongside art and commerce, reflects a growing trend towards integrated cultural experiences that go beyond traditional retail. This model could serve as a blueprint for other cities looking to revitalize their urban centers through creative and culturally rich initiatives. The project's commitment to fostering emerging talent and providing educational opportunities, such as the fashion residency, also highlights its long-term impact on nurturing future generations of artists and designers.
