What's Happening?
UEFA, in collaboration with UK & Ireland 2028 Limited (UK&I 2028), has initiated the UEFA EURO 2028 Innovation Programme. This program aims to identify and support innovative solutions that will enhance the tournament experience and deliver sustainable
benefits for volunteers, communities, and stakeholders. The initiative is a core part of the tournament's goal to create a positive, lasting social impact in each host nation, leveraging football to unite communities. The program is calling on innovators to design, test, and validate solutions that can contribute to this ambition. The UEFA EURO 2028 tournament is scheduled to take place in the United Kingdom and Ireland between June 9 and July 9, 2028, with events extending beyond the eight host cities and nine stadiums. The program focuses on two main innovation challenges: unlocking the lasting value of the volunteer experience and connecting communities through digital engagement and physical experiences. Innovators are encouraged to apply with solutions that are scalable and replicable for future UEFA events.
Why It's Important?
This innovation program is significant as it represents a strategic effort by UEFA and UK&I 2028 to move beyond traditional tournament organization by integrating social impact and community engagement as central pillars. By focusing on volunteers, the program seeks to provide tangible, transferable skills and pathways for continued involvement in football and community activities, addressing potential skill gaps and fostering personal development. For communities, the emphasis on inclusive digital and physical experiences aims to broaden the tournament's reach beyond existing football fans, promoting a sense of belonging and using the event as a catalyst for social cohesion. The program's commitment to piloting solutions with real volunteer cohorts and engaging diverse audiences could set a new standard for how major sporting events contribute to societal well-being and leave a lasting legacy, rather than just being temporary spectacles. This approach could influence future large-scale events to adopt similar community-focused strategies.
What's Next?
The application period for the UEFA EURO 2028 Innovation Programme is open from September 30 to November 15, 2026. Following this, an evaluation and innovator selection process will occur in December 2026, with selected innovators onboarded in January 2027. The pilot development phase will run from February 2027 to May 2028, during which chosen innovators, supported by UEFA and UK&I 2028, will develop and test their solutions. A showcase event is planned for June-July 2028, where pilot projects and their outcomes will be presented. From August 2028 onwards, there will be an assessment of the impact and potential for these innovations to scale beyond EURO 2028. Selected innovators may receive funding of up to £200,000, exclusive access to experimental grounds, expert mentorship, and opportunities to network and gain exposure.
Beyond the Headlines
The UEFA EURO 2028 Innovation Programme delves deeper than just improving event logistics; it addresses the ethical and social responsibilities of major sporting organizations. By prioritizing the development of volunteers and fostering community connections, UEFA is acknowledging the broader societal role that football can play. This initiative could lead to a paradigm shift in how large-scale events are planned and executed, moving towards models that emphasize long-term social returns alongside economic and entertainment value. The focus on inclusivity and reaching new, diverse audiences suggests a recognition that the appeal of football can be a powerful tool for social good, potentially inspiring other sports and cultural events to adopt similar frameworks for community engagement and legacy building. The program's success could redefine the metrics of a successful tournament, extending beyond viewership and revenue to include measurable social impact.
