What's Happening?
Utah is exploring the potential of geothermal energy to meet its growing electricity needs. The state has an estimated 49,000 MW of geothermal energy potential, which could generate about 390 million MWh of electricity annually, significantly exceeding
its current consumption. The majority of these resources are accessible through enhanced geothermal systems (EGS). Governor Spencer Cox's 2026 fiscal budget includes $4.2 million for geothermal energy development as part of the 'Operation Gigawatt' program, aiming to diversify and double Utah's energy production by 2034.
