Arya Satheesh, an 18-year-old high school student from Ireland, has been awarded the European regional title at The Earth Prize 2026 for her invention, Eco Purge. This plant-based biodegradable plastic is designed to combat microplastic pollution by releasing
enzymes that degrade PET-derived microplastics as it breaks down. Satheesh's innovation not only offers a sustainable alternative to conventional plastics but also actively reduces existing microplastic pollution. Her project was inspired by previous research into microplastic contamination and aims to address the low global recycling rates. Satheesh received $12,500 to further develop her prototype.
