What's Happening?
Crunchyroll and Goodfellas have partnered with Xilam Films to produce 'The Wolf,' an animated psychological thriller set to release in April 2027. The film, based on Jean-Marc Rochette's graphic novel, is directed by Benjamin Massoubre and Fursy Tessier.
It features a voice cast led by Roschdy Zem and Virginie Efira. 'The Wolf' marks Crunchyroll's expansion into European author-driven animation, with the platform acquiring worldwide SVOD rights, excluding China and Japan. The film is part of Xilam's broader slate of projects showcased at the Annecy Animation Film Festival, including 'Lucy Lost' and 'The Doomies.'
Why It's Important?
This collaboration signifies a strategic expansion for Crunchyroll, traditionally focused on anime, into European animation. By acquiring 'The Wolf,' Crunchyroll is diversifying its content offerings, potentially attracting a broader audience. The partnership also highlights the growing international appeal of European animation, with Xilam Films at the forefront. This move could influence other streaming platforms to explore similar ventures, impacting the global animation industry by encouraging more cross-cultural collaborations and investments in diverse storytelling.
