What's Happening?
The 'Play to Disconnect' project is establishing sustainable, welcoming meeting spaces in Spain and Romania to promote screen-free leisure and strengthen family bonds through modern board games. As part of its 'Creating Meeting Spaces' work package, the project aims
to foster face-to-face interaction, intergenerational learning, and healthier digital habits. In Spain, Ludus Magnus (European Institute for Modern Board Games) has partnered with Distrito Zero Valladolid to create a dedicated space for board game activities, workshops, and training courses. This collaboration will promote the educational, social, and recreational benefits of board games. Similar initiatives are planned for Câmpia Turzii in Romania. These spaces are designed to ensure the project's impact continues beyond its Erasmus+ funding period, serving as lasting local resources for families, educators, and community organizations.
Why It's Important?
In an increasingly digital world, initiatives like 'Play to Disconnect' are vital for promoting healthy digital habits and fostering real-world social connections. The project addresses the growing concern about excessive screen time and its potential impact on family dynamics and intergenerational communication. By providing dedicated screen-free environments, it encourages meaningful interactions and strengthens community ties through shared activities. The focus on modern board games offers an engaging alternative to digital entertainment, promoting cognitive skills, strategic thinking, and social development. This approach can help individuals, particularly younger generations, develop stronger self-regulation regarding technology use and cultivate a healthier relationship with digital devices, ultimately contributing to improved mental well-being and social cohesion.
What's Next?
The established meeting spaces in Spain and Romania will host workshops and initiatives organized by Ludus Magnus, promoting the educational and social benefits of modern board games. These venues will also serve for board game-based activities integrated into Ludus Magnus' training courses and transnational project meetings from late summer 2026 onwards, fostering experiential learning and intercultural exchange. Families, schools, parent-teacher associations, NGOs, and other organizations can request tailor-made workshops adapted to their specific needs and objectives. The project aims to ensure long-term sustainability, creating lasting local resources for communities. The continued operation of these spaces will provide ongoing opportunities for screen-free engagement and community building.
Beyond the Headlines
The 'Play to Disconnect' project touches upon broader societal implications related to digital saturation and the need for intentional 'digital sabbaths' or screen-free spaces. It highlights a growing recognition that while technology offers numerous benefits, it also necessitates a conscious effort to balance digital engagement with real-world interactions. The initiative's focus on intergenerational learning through board games underscores the value of traditional forms of play in a modern context, promoting skills that might be overlooked in purely digital environments, such as direct communication, negotiation, and empathy. This project could serve as a model for other communities seeking to foster healthier digital habits and strengthen social bonds in an increasingly connected yet often isolated world.
