What's Happening?
The Regenerative Organic Alliance (ROA) has outlined comprehensive labeling guidelines and terms of use for products bearing the Regenerative Organic Certified® marks. These guidelines mandate that all use of the certification marks by certified operations,
brands, or finished goods manufacturers must undergo review and approval by the ROA. Submissions for label and marketing material approval are required at least thirty days prior to printing packaging or promoting products. The ROA emphasizes that the Regenerative Organic Certified® seal is not to be used in a misleading or deceptive manner, nor as a primary brand or indicator of source or origin. Instead, it functions solely as a certification mark. Organizations are also responsible for ensuring compliance with USDA National Organic Program labeling requirements and any other applicable government regulations in the product's country of sale. The ROA is not liable for an organization's failure to comply with these regulations.
Why It's Important?
These stringent labeling guidelines are crucial for maintaining the integrity and consumer trust associated with the Regenerative Organic Certified® designation. By requiring pre-approval for all marketing materials and explicitly defining the appropriate use of the seal, the ROA aims to prevent greenwashing and ensure that consumers can confidently identify products that genuinely adhere to regenerative organic principles. This clarity benefits both consumers seeking sustainable options and legitimate businesses investing in regenerative practices. The emphasis on compliance with existing organic regulations, such as those from the USDA National Organic Program, further strengthens the credibility of the certification. This framework helps to differentiate products in a competitive market, potentially driving consumer demand for goods produced with environmental and social responsibility at their core, thereby influencing broader industry standards towards more sustainable practices.
What's Next?
Organizations seeking to use the Regenerative Organic Certified® marks will need to strictly adhere to these new guidelines, including the mandatory 30-day pre-approval process for all labeling and marketing materials. The ROA will continue to provide public updates on the certification status of operations through an online directory, requiring organizations to verify the valid status and level of certification (Bronze, Silver, or Gold) of their sourced products. The governing documents, including these labeling guidelines, are subject to change, with the ROA committing to provide 180 days' notice for significant alterations. Minor changes, such as grammatical corrections, will be effective upon publication. This ongoing oversight and potential for updates mean that certified entities must remain vigilant in their compliance efforts and adapt to any future modifications in the certification program.
Beyond the Headlines
The detailed labeling requirements from the Regenerative Organic Alliance reflect a broader trend towards increased transparency and accountability in the sustainable products market. As consumer awareness of environmental and social impacts grows, the demand for verifiable certifications like Regenerative Organic Certified® is likely to increase. This initiative could set a precedent for other certification bodies, encouraging more rigorous standards and enforcement across various industries. The distinction between a primary brand and a certification mark is particularly significant, as it reinforces the idea that the certification is an endorsement of practices, not a brand identity itself. This approach helps to prevent dilution of the certification's meaning and ensures that its value remains tied to the adherence to regenerative principles, fostering a more ethical and sustainable marketplace.
