What's Happening?
Matt Hardy, during an episode of 'The Extreme Life of Matt Hardy,' disclosed that AEW President Tony Khan was not always pleased with certain content featured on 'Being The Elite' (BTE). Hardy reflected on the web series' influence on professional wrestling
and noted instances during his AEW tenure where Khan expressed dissatisfaction with the show or actions of The Young Bucks. Despite Khan's occasional displeasure, Hardy remains a staunch supporter of Matt and Nick Jackson, commending their storytelling approach throughout their careers. Hardy emphasized the importance of not taking oneself too seriously in wrestling, acknowledging that while seriousness is sometimes required, the inherently outrageous nature of the business also allows for comedy and fun, which he believes The Young Bucks consistently embrace. He also mentioned recent interactions with The Young Bucks, expressing mutual appreciation for their work and accomplishments, particularly their role in establishing AEW.
Why It's Important?
This revelation offers insight into the internal dynamics and creative tensions within All Elite Wrestling (AEW), a significant player in the U.S. professional wrestling landscape. Tony Khan's reported reservations about 'Being The Elite' highlight the challenges of balancing creative freedom with corporate oversight in a major wrestling promotion. 'Being The Elite' has been instrumental in the careers of The Young Bucks and other AEW talent, serving as a platform for character development and storyline advancement outside of traditional television programming. The show's influence is further underscored by the fact that AEW's annual 'Full Gear' event originated from a running joke on BTE. This situation illustrates the delicate balance between allowing talent to connect with fans through independent content and ensuring that such content aligns with the promotion's broader vision and brand. It also sheds light on the creative control exercised by AEW's leadership and the potential for differing artistic visions within the company.
What's Next?
While the immediate implications of this past discontent are not explicitly detailed, the ongoing success of 'Being The Elite' and The Young Bucks within AEW suggests that any creative differences were either resolved or managed effectively. The continued support from figures like Matt Hardy indicates a prevailing appreciation for the unique contributions of BTE to the wrestling ecosystem. Future developments might involve a more formalized structure for talent-produced content to ensure alignment with AEW's strategic goals, or conversely, a continued allowance for creative autonomy given the proven success of BTE in engaging fans and building narratives. The relationship between AEW management and its talent, particularly those with significant creative influence, will remain a key factor in the promotion's trajectory and its ability to innovate within the competitive U.S. wrestling market.
Beyond the Headlines
The dynamic between Tony Khan and 'Being The Elite' touches upon broader themes of artistic control versus independent expression in entertainment industries. In professional wrestling, where character and narrative are paramount, the ability of performers to shape their own stories and connect directly with their audience can be a powerful asset. However, this also presents a challenge for promotion owners who must maintain a cohesive brand and manage public perception. The success of BTE, despite occasional managerial concerns, underscores the value of grassroots content creation in building a loyal fanbase and fostering a unique identity. This case could serve as a model or cautionary tale for other entertainment ventures exploring similar hybrid content strategies, where official narratives coexist with and are influenced by independent, fan-driven productions. It highlights the evolving nature of media consumption and the increasing importance of direct-to-fan engagement in shaping a brand's appeal.
