Kwekerij Aarts, a plant nursery, has taken a significant step towards sustainable horticulture by installing a 2 MW air-to-water heat pump to support a new 3.6-hectare greenhouse. This system is one of the largest of its kind in the greenhouse sector,
marking a shift in energy use among growers. Owner Rens Aarts chose this system after considering several options, including combined heat and power, which was ruled out due to grid limitations. The heat pump, which uses CO₂ as a natural refrigerant, has been operational since early this year. The system is designed to be efficient, with a steady return temperature of 30°C, and is supported by solar panels and an additional CHP unit for energy balance. Smart software manages the setup, ensuring consistent performance despite weather and electricity supply fluctuations.
