What's Happening?
Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E), in collaboration with Rewiring America, Google, Tesla, Sunrun, and other partners, has launched SHARE (Smart Home Assets for Reliability and Efficiency), a new Virtual Power Plant (VPP) initiative in California.
This VPP aims to integrate home batteries, smart devices, and battery-enabled heat pumps to reduce energy demand during peak periods. The program, fully funded by Google, is designed to create additional capacity, support grid reliability, and lower costs for participating customers. PG&E will work with Tesla, Sunrun, and Renew Home to enroll approximately 21,000 existing flexible energy devices into the program. Additionally, Carrier Global Corporation is a launch partner for new deployments, providing battery-enabled heat pump solutions. The SHARE program is expected to run through 2027, with initial findings anticipated in late 2026 or early 2027. Eligible customers in Santa Clara and Alameda counties will be targeted for participation, receiving incentives such as discounts on Carrier systems.
