What's Happening?
Eli Lilly has reported strong results for its drug Jaypirca (pirtobrutinib) in treating chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) at the European Hematology Association (EHA) congress. The BRUIN CLL-322 trial demonstrated that adding Jaypirca to the standard
regimen of Venclexta and rituximab reduced the risk of disease progression or death by 45%. After two years, 86.9% of patients on the Jaypirca regimen were alive without disease progression, compared to 71.8% on the standard treatment alone. The trial included patients previously treated with older BTK inhibitors, some of whom showed resistance.
Why It's Important?
The trial results suggest that Jaypirca could become a new standard of care for relapsed or refractory CLL, offering a significant improvement in progression-free survival. This could expand treatment options for patients who have developed resistance to existing therapies. The findings also support the potential for Jaypirca to increase its market share, with analysts predicting substantial revenue growth if the drug's label is extended. This development highlights the ongoing innovation in cancer treatment, particularly in targeting specific pathways to improve patient outcomes.
What's Next?
Eli Lilly plans to submit the new trial results to global regulatory authorities to seek an extension of Jaypirca's label. If approved, this could enhance the drug's market potential and provide a new treatment option for CLL patients. The company is also exploring Jaypirca's efficacy in first-line settings, which could further broaden its application and impact in oncology.
