What's Happening?
Researchers at the National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR) have developed a new charge controller for the HERO Wave Energy Converter (WEC), a device designed to harness wave energy to desalinate seawater. The HERO WEC, funded by the U.S. Department of Energy,
has been under development since 2020. The new charge controller is a custom-built component that addresses the unique challenges of wave energy, which is characterized by irregular energy surges. The previous version of the charge controller used off-the-shelf components that struggled with these irregularities. The new design, developed in 2024, has been tested extensively in laboratory settings, showing it can capture up to eight times more power than its predecessor. This advancement is expected to enhance the efficiency and reliability of the HERO WEC, allowing it to produce more usable power and desalinate more seawater.

The results will help identify any final adjustments needed before the system undergoes ocean testing. The team is also interested in collaborating with other technology developers to integrate the charge controller into different wave energy systems, potentially accelerating the development of new wave energy technologies.
