What's Happening?
The University of Washington's Intercollegiate Athletics department has activated its new Sundodger Studios, a four-control-room IP production facility. This state-of-the-art system, integrated by Conference Technologies, Inc. (CTI) and designed in collaboration
with Anthony James Partners (AJP), utilizes Grass Valley cameras and production switchers on a SMPTE ST 2110 network. The facility, which replaces an older SDI system, includes two K-Frame SXP production switcher frames and ten LDX 100 Series cameras. It went live on August 12th for the Washington Huskies' opening men's soccer game. The new setup is designed to support 1080p, UHD, and HDR workflows, providing the capacity for multiple simultaneous live sports productions and offering students access to professional broadcast technology.
Why It's Important?
This technological upgrade is crucial for the University of Washington's Intercollegiate Athletics as it significantly enhances their capability to produce high-quality live coverage of Huskies sporting events. The move to an IP-based infrastructure allows for greater flexibility, scalability, and efficiency in managing complex broadcast workflows, which is essential for a member of the Big Ten Conference. By providing students with hands-on experience with industry-standard Grass Valley equipment, Sundodger Studios is also playing a vital role in training the next generation of broadcast professionals. This investment positions the university at the forefront of collegiate sports production, ensuring that their athletic events are presented with the same level of technical sophistication as professional sports broadcasts, thereby elevating the fan experience and potentially attracting more viewers.
What's Next?
Following its successful debut, the University of Washington plans to further integrate its Grass Valley production systems with existing Daktronics technology across its athletics venues. This integration will streamline operations and enhance the overall production ecosystem. The university's production and engineering teams will continue to adapt their workflows to fully leverage the capabilities of the new IP infrastructure, gaining experience with the advanced system. The facility was showcased at an industry open house on September 18th, co-hosted by the university, Grass Valley, and CTI, indicating a commitment to sharing their technological advancements and potentially influencing other collegiate programs. The ongoing development of workflows and the training of students will ensure the long-term success and impact of Sundodger Studios.
Beyond the Headlines
The launch of Sundodger Studios represents a broader trend in collegiate sports: the increasing professionalization of athletic broadcasting. Universities are investing heavily in advanced production technologies not only to meet the demands of modern sports media but also to provide invaluable educational opportunities. This facility serves as a living laboratory where students can gain practical experience with the same equipment and workflows used in professional broadcasting, making them highly competitive in the job market. Furthermore, the adoption of SMPTE ST 2110 IP standards signifies a shift towards future-proof infrastructure, allowing for greater interoperability and adaptability to evolving broadcast technologies. This commitment to innovation underscores the growing importance of media production as an integral component of collegiate athletics.
