What's Happening?
Fortescue and CMB.TECH have signed a significant charter agreement for up to 12 ammonia-capable Newcastlemax vessels, marking a milestone in zero-emission shipping. The vessels, ordered from China's Qingdao Beihai Shipbuilding, will include three with
dual-fuel ammonia engines, expected to enter service by the end of 2026. The remaining vessels will be ammonia-ready, allowing future conversion. This initiative aims to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 250,000 tonnes annually if fueled by green ammonia, showcasing ammonia as a viable marine fuel.
