The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) to implement renewable energy solutions for telecom infrastructure in Nigeria. This initiative aims to reduce the reliance
on diesel generators, thereby cutting operational expenses and enhancing service reliability. The partnership will focus on migrating telecom base stations located within 1 to 2 kilometers of existing mini-grids to renewable energy sources. This collaboration is expected to improve access to reliable electricity and telecom services, particularly in underserved rural communities. The initiative is part of a broader effort to support socio-economic development by ensuring continuous connectivity even in areas without national grid supply. In 2025, Nigerian telecom companies spent approximately NGN860 billion (around USD 630 million) on diesel due to frequent power shortages, highlighting the financial burden that this partnership seeks to alleviate.
